The former Japan Coach who was also on the Juventus bench has been giving his thoughts on the state of Italian football, and has urged the Rossoneri to improve their midfield.
“I’ve always thought the most important part of a football team is the midfield,” Zaccheroni explained to Gazzetta dello Sport.
“Milan must first try to get [Riccardo] Montolivo back to his best, then try to get in more quality in the middle of the park.
“I think Juventus and Roma are a step ahead for this reason alone.”
The tactician, who won a Serie A title with the San Siro club in 1999 also gave his view on Milan’s misfiring strikers.
“[Stephan] El Sharaawy is not playing to his full potential, I think he has extraordinary ability.
“He’s shown that in the past, and that’s why [Milan Coach Filippo] Inzaghi must work with him to allow him to express himself in the best possible way.
“Milan need a presence in the penalty area. You can still take risks to win, but there always have to be players in the box.
“For example, earlier in the season [Keisuke] Honda could always find the space and time to move forward and attack balls into the box.
“In that regard, his goals this season are all photocopies but it’s not always going to go that well.
“That’s why I’m hoping Fernando Torres can get back to his best, [at the moment] he’s confirming the notion that Spaniard have trouble settling in our League.”
