Juventus legend Alessandro Del Piero revealed that there were ‘certain moments’ when he considered switching to Real Madrid, although he ‘always chose to stay.’
The former Italy international spent almost the entirety of his playing career with the Old Lady, being a part of the team from 1993 to 2012. During his 19 years in Turin, Del Piero made 705 appearances across all competitions, scoring 290 goals and providing 150 assists. His contract was not extended in 2012 and he left to join Sydney FC on a free transfer.
Speaking to Sky Sports Italia ahead of Real Madrid’s Champions League clash against Chelsea, Del Piero discussing the emotion of returning to the Santiago Bernabeu for the first time since 2008, where he scored a brace for Juventus.
“This stadium gave me a great victory where I scored a brace but above all the standing ovation of the opposition fans. It’s also true that I lost several times here.”
He then revealed that there were moments when he considered joining Los Blancos.
“The fans are warm, always. I’ve never been close to joining them, in certain moments I could’ve been further away from Juve, particular moments, but I have no regrets and I always chose to stay.
“This stadium is a unique environment, as well as Old Trafford, but I made my choice.”
In the nine matches that Del Piero faced Real Madrid during his playing career, he won five times and lost four, scoring five goals.
