During his interview with DAZN, Massimiliano Allegri claimed that comparisons with Leo Messi have affected Paulo Dybala, who must ‘focus on his qualities.’

The Argentinean striker is available as a free agent as Juventus have decided against extending his expiring contract. He is in advanced talks with Inter and the Nerazzurri director Beppe Marotta claimed yesterday that he hopes La Joya will eventually move to the Stadio Meazza.

Dybala has played 221 games under Allegri, more than with any other coach in his career, scoring 93 goals. They haven’t always had a relaxed rapport and the Italian boss has now explained why the Argentinean sometimes struggled during his time at Juventus.

“I think he must re-discover his true self. There was a moment when he was dragged by the fact that he was considered the new Messi, but everyone must be himself,” he said.

“You can’t emulate the others. He has a lot to give to football, he has extraordinary technical qualities, he is so good, but he must focus on his physical and technical qualities.”

Messi is one of the few stars Allegri hasn’t worked with during his career. “I didn’t coach him, he is the only top player I miss. I coached all the others. To watch Gigi Bufon train and talk to the team was incredible. Except when he went in goal and didn’t dive,” he said, smiling.

Dybala joined Allegri’s Juventus in 2015 in a €40m deal from Palermo. During his interview with DAZN, Allegri briefly explained Juventus’ poor results in 2021-22, the first trophyless campaign since 2010-11. “The other teams were not superior, but if we didn’t win, it means that we lacked something,” he said.
