The Partenopei didn’t attend their away Serie A game at Juventus at the beginning of the season after Piotr Zielinski and Eljif Elmas had tested positive for COVID.

The match was scheduled just days after Napoli had played Genoa, who then developed over a dozen COVID cases.

Napoli didn’t show up at the Allianz Stadium and were initially given a 3-0 defeat by default and docked one point.

The FIGC Disciplinary Commission ruled Napoli did not have enough reason to warrant missing the fixture, despite being banned from travelling by the local ASL (health authority).

The ASL could technically over-rule the Serie A protocol, but the investigation decided this did not warrant ‘force majeure’ – unforeseeable circumstances to prevent their journey.

The ruling made clear that although the initial ASL guidance made it ‘difficult’ to travel to Turin, it was not an outright ban until Sunday, at which point Napoli had already cancelled their flight and hotel.

The FIGC ruling was overturned by the CONI Collegio di Garanzia in December, with the game that will be replayed and the penalty point revoked.

The FIGC has not yet decided a date for the replay, but this evening Juventus and Napoli will finally meet for the first time this season at Reggio Emilia’s Mapei Stadium in the Italian Supercup Final.
