Juric: ‘Only winning counts’

Genoa Coach Ivan Juric says “winning counts and it doesn’t really matter how you play” ahead of the derby with Sampdoria.

Tomorrow sees the Derby della Lanterna between the two sides from the port city, and the tactician addressed the media this afternoon.

“The derby is special,” Juric, also a former Genoa player, acknoweldged.

“Winning counts, and it doesn’t really matter how you play. In the past we’ve maybe played badly and won, and we were happy anyway!

“It’s pleasing that Genoa are favourites, but I’ve seen a very calm squad.

“We’ve been preparing for the derby for some time, it’s a game which you have to put everything into from the beginning of pre-season.

“Tomorrow is a game where we have to make the most of what we’ve done in the past three months.

“As a player you can go through the derby very calmly, as a Coach you have more to think about. You have to motivate the players and other things.”

Juric was then asked how strong he thinks Sampdoria are.

“When you look at Sampdoria’s squad it’s stratospheric, they have [Luca] Cigarini on the bench as well as a €10m player in [Dennis] Praet.

“[Luis] Muriel is very strong, as is Bruno Fernandes. You can look at their squad and say it’s not as good as ours, but that’s not the case.

“I think they’ve taken a lot of players for big money. If you sign players for €7m, €8m, €9m and you have players like Muriel, [Matias] Silvestre and [Emiliano] Viviano you have to compete for the Champions League.”
