Junior Messias describes his first few days as a Milan player and reveals his mum and dad’s reaction when he signed with the Rossoneri.

Messias moved to Milan from Crotone in the last days of the summer transfer window.

The 30-year-old has only played one season in Serie A during his career, in 2020-21 with Crotone, contributing nine goals and four assists.

Only three years ago, he was playing in Italy’s Serie D.

Messias played the sport purely as a hobby, supplementing his income with jobs that ranged from recovering bricks from demolished buildings to delivering washing machines.

After the first two weeks in Milanello, Messias spoke to Milan TV about his first two weeks at the club.

“It’s been great, I’ve already lived in Northern Italy, but I think Milan is different, it’s more modern, I am having a good time,” he said.

“It was a great experience, you’re arriving at such an important club and well-equipped sports centre and then you can get to work with the coach and Zlatan, it was a pleasure.

“I think of the Brazilian players who played here and made history, who revolutionised football,” he continued.

“Then, there are people like director Maldini who is a legend in the game, so when I think of Milan, I think of the teams that made history.

“I watched them on TV and it was very exciting. Last year, I did an interview where I said that I really understood I was a Serie A player when we needed to study our opponents and after entering the video analysis room Milan came up.”

His wife and son have joined him in Milan, but his mum and dad are still in Brazil with the rest of his family.

“My parents are the most important thing to me as well as my wife and children. I am happy with how they taught me things in life,” Messias said.

“My father never put anything in my hands. He used to tell me: ‘If you want it, go get it.’

“He taught me how to live, I watched him, so I learned to work with him. I can do a bit of everything. I can lay bricks, I can do the electrics, a bit of everything because we always had a relationship that was closer than my brother.

“They were really happy, over the moon, when I signed with Milan. It’s what they wanted. My mum is a big believer, an evangelist and this is a promise that once my aunt prayed and she told me even though I didn’t believe it anymore because I was already grown up, but she told me I’d become a footballer in Europe, she described it like this, that I would play for big teams.

“At some point, I thought God changed his plans and now I need to do something else. My mum is really happy too, because you realise that God does exist because to say this to a boy of 18-19 years…At 18 you usually already have your path mapped out becoming a footballer. Faith is very important to me.”

Messias has yet to make his first appearance with the Rossoneri this term, but has been training at Milanello to regain his best form.

  1. God does exist Messias and you going to carry Milan on your shoulders. You are a stone the builders rejected. You have our prayers and support.
