Fiorentina striker Luka Jovic says the media ‘misinterpreted’ his claims about his future at the Stadio Artemio Franchi and insists he is fully focused on the Tuscans.

Jovic’s latest interview with Serbian outlet ATV caused outrage in Florence as the 24-year-old claimed Fiorentina were a starting point toward a bigger club.

“I think Fiorentina is a good springboard to get back into top form and return to a big club again,” said the ex-Real Madrid striker.

The Serbia international clarified his position through a statement released by his agents, quoted by Italian media, including TMW.

“I am sorry if the media misinterpreted my quotes, I feel well at Fiorentina and am fully focused on this season. I don’t have memories of me being so happy and realised,” the striker said.

“The only I can say is that I will continue to give my best to achieve our targets, I hope I can leave a mark here.

“Fiorentina are a great club, where some of the greatest footballers played. I hope my name will be there as well and I hope I will show with my performances the respect I have for this jersey.”

Jovic joined Fiorentina on a free transfer from Real Madrid last summer and has gone on to score six goals in 18 appearances across all competitions with the Tuscans.

Some Fiorentina fans were unhappy with his celebration after a late goal against Inter two weeks ago as Jovic appeared to hit back at criticism with controversial gestures in front of Fiorentina ultras in Curva Fiesole.

Jovic signed a two-year deal at the Stadio Franchi, but the Tuscans have an option to extend his stay at the club by two more years, doubling his current €2.5m-a-year salary.
