Jorginho admits ‘that it will take a while’ to forget about Italy’s World Cup disappointment and believes Chelsea still have a chance to qualify against Real Madrid.

The Italy international provided the assist for the Blues’ only goal against Real Madrid last night when a hat-trick of Karim Benzema helped the Merengues seal a 3-1 in London in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals.

“We all made errors and against these kinds of teams and players, you pay for mistakes,” Jorginho told Prime Video Italia.

“We must learn quickly from this. It’s not over yet. There is one more game and we have room for improvement. We can turn things around [in the second leg].

“I tried to help the team in the best way I could,” he continued.

“Unfortunately, it’s not enough sometimes, for many reasons. For mistakes, and I am not talking about the third goal, for wrong choices. We need to work on what we can improve.”

Chelsea’s defeat came less than two weeks after Italy’s 1-0 loss against North Macedonia in the World Cup play-offs semi-finals. The Azzurri have missed out on the second successive World Cup for the first time in history. Has Jorginho gotten over the disappointment with his country?

“No, not yet. It will take a while and it hurts so much for all of us. As they say, we must move on, but unfortunately it’s a regret that remains inside. We must use it as a motivation to do better in the future and use this pain in our favour.”

The 30-year-old has scored nine goals in 39 appearances with Chelsea this season, all from the spot. Unfortunately for the Azzurri, he has missed the last three penalties taken with La Nazionale, including two crucial ones in the games against Switzerland in the World Cup qualification group.

Jorginho’s contract with Chelsea expires in June 2023 and he’s been linked with a move to Juventus in the summer.

  1. He choked, but all the trophies he’s won and all the cash he has should make him feel better

  2. “We all made errors and against these kinds of teams and players, you pay for mistakes,” No clown – you made the biggest mistakes of all – two failed penalties and stopping to wait for a whistle that didn’t come and allowing Nth Macedonia to score. Please retire – we have more talented midfielders than you in and outside this squad.
