Italy international and Chelsea midfielder Jorginho couldn’t help but have flashbacks of his EURO 2020 Final error when facing Everton and England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford from the spot.

The former Napoli and Verona man was horrified when his penalty was saved during the decisive shoot-out at Wembley Stadium last summer, although Gianluigi Donnarumma’s save on Bukayo Saka moments later ensured Italy lifted the trophy regardless.

So when deciding Chelsea’s opening Premier League match of the season against Everton, Jorginho inevitably thought back to that day.

“Of course you think about it, you worry during the week, thinking what the keeper might do at that moment. I took a decision and fortunately it was the right decision this time.”

He didn’t go for the trademark ‘stutter’ run-up, suggesting he is bringing more versatility to his technique.

“Definitely, for me penalty is 70-75 per cent in the head, so I thought a lot, I trained and fortunately today it went well.”

Italy can only hope Jorginho has found a new psychological balance from the spot, considering two failed penalties against Switzerland proved decisive for World Cup qualification.

  1. It’s nice to see that he can score for a English team but not for an Italian one. I hope the comments don’t hurt his feelings.

  2. Mancini should have required Bonucci to take the first penalty vs. Switerland in Switzerland. Why? Because we would have still had Switzerland in Italy. That would have been enough time for Jorginho to calm himself psychologically.

Bonucci’s penalty against Spain was perfectly placed in the top left corner.

Coming off a championship penalty shootout miss during a WC qualifying againat a tesm that eliminated France in the Euro’s IS NOT the time for attempting a “redemption.”

  3. He should have thought back to his first penalty miss in Switerland and given Bonucci the chance to convert the penalty in Rome.

THAT and his miss vs. England should have both been in his memory.

  4. Jorginho scores most of the penalties he takes. I would prefer he continue to take them for Italy, not Bonnucci or Berardi. I’ve only seen one player that’s better at PKs, that’s Balotelli.

  5. @Azzurri CDN…

Under normal circumstances, I would agree with you. However, it was obvious Jorgihno was feel the psychological weight for “redemption.”

Bonucci was clinical vs. Spain with his perfectly placed effort in the top left corner. Again, we still had a game v. Switzerland in Rome. That should have ptovided plenty of time for Jorginho to recollect himself and add technique.

Hindsight is always 20/20. However, Mancini knew that Jorginho was feeling the psychological pressure as a result of the Euro penalty final v. England.
