Italy star Jorginho is ‘angry’ for his penalty miss but is ‘already thinking about the next one.’

The Azzurri and Chelsea star missed a second penalty kick in a row in Italy’s World Cup qualifying match against Switzerland on Sunday.

It was his second successive mistake from the spot after Jordan Pickford denied him during the shootout of the UEFA Euro 2020 Final.

“I’m very angry about the mistake from the spot, it hurts because it was in a key moment of the game,” Jorginho told Rai Sport.

“I take responsibility, the team deserved the victory and the penalty was an opportunity to break the deadlock. Unfortunately. I made a mistake and it hurts.”

Jorginho is regarded as one of the best penalty kick takers in the world and the last two mistakes are not affecting his self-confidence.

“The goalkeepers are studying me, so I will do the same with them, I am already thinking about the next one,” the former Napoli star claimed.

“I was feeling confident when I went on the spot. But he saved it so I took a deep breath and I thought there were many minutes left.”

Italy picked up two draws against Bulgaria and Switzerland in their first two games as European champions.

They are the Group C leaders with 11 points in five games, but the Swiss sit second in the table with seven points and two games in hand.

Donnarumma defends Jorginho: ‘He always scores against me’

“That’s how football is, everybody knows it, it’s made of different moments. Somebody is saying that the spell is broken, but let them talk,” Jorginho said.

“Many are just talking about our mistakes, but they forgot about what we’ve done till now. That’s what we must think about, we must have enthusiasm and self-esteem.”

So, do Italy believe they can qualify for the World Cup?

“How couldn’t we? If we don’t do it, then who will? You? I don’t think so. We gave our all against Bulgaria and Switzerland, we honoured the shirt and we will continue to do so, regardless of the result.”

Jorginho joined Chelsea in a €57m deal from Napoli in 2018. His contract with the Blues expires in June 2023, but the Premier League champions are considering a contract extension for the 29-year-old.

  1. Big deal he missed a penalty shot, at least he hit the net. It should not have come down to this anyway. Get your swagger back and bury those shots boys, your making us nervous.

  2. He needs to reassess his approach. The goalies are not diving and guessing pre-hop. They are not moving until he shots and if you don’t move as the goalie pre hop, his PK becomes very stoppage.

  3. He needs to stop that stupid routine. good goalkeepers have worked it out. They make the move first and actually fake him out. The lack of power in his shots are also telling. They are not hard to save if you are mentally disciplined. He won’t change though. Beppe Signori he is not when it comes to penalties.

  4. When it comes to striking the ball after his little hop, he needs to inject more power in his shot, otherwise he looks a bit of a tit when it goes wrong!
