Chelsea and Italy midfielder Jorginho finds it ‘insane’ that the Premier League has chosen not to take advantage of the five substitutions rule, instead going back to three, and warns it will damage players and ultimately fans.

The change was introduced in 2020 after the lockdown, when the calendar was compressed and players were put under more stress than ever before.

However, while FIFA and UEFA look set to make it a permanent switch, and it remains five in most of Europe’s big leagues, the Premier League decided to go back to three substitutions per game.

“It’s very hard, because we don’t have time to rest. We need to play every three days and we have just three subs and that’s insane we don’t go for five,” Jorginho told beIN Sports.

“In my opinion it’s just too much. We should do something about it, because if we keep going like this, we’ll just have more players injured and maybe the quality of the game will go down, so that’s not the best for entertainment.

“Maybe the English should look at that.”

Remarkably, the Premier League and the Bundesliga had the option of continuing with five substitutions per match, but voted against it.

  1. The 5 substitution rule benefits the ‘big clubs’ who have bigger squads and strength in depth most (in this instance it would benefit Chelsea).

Personally, I would argue for the contrary. More leagues should have stuck to a three sub rule, this would have helped the smaller team in the respective leagues and may have seen more fringe internationals look for moves.

Finally and it’s been noted on other posts… this is news not worthy of football Italia… this is ‘bottom feeder’ premierships news that is barely interesting.

Why not fill this space with informal journalism about top seria B talent than this ‘insane’ non article.

  2. 5 subs are the best for futbol.
Rugby and Cricket made huge changes in their games but futbol are standing still for the last 100 years.
We need to evolve futbol-make it more attractive.
    Currently it’s monotonous.

  3. The consequence of packing the calendar is maximum risk to the players and maximum profits for clubs and TV. Football is not for the fans. With 2022 also including the World Cup, expect tons of player injuries.

  4. For those commenting otherwise, this is useful Football Italia news since he’s one of our main midfielders and will undoubtedly play tons of games for Chelsea and risk burning out before the World Cup. Not that the EPL cares at all about that.

  5. Some smaller teams also play high intensity football with a lot of energy, it’s useful for them too. But of course it’s going to benefit the bigger clubs, they are the ones who play every three days. That’s just insane. Those top players are what attract people to the sport, what’s the point of over using them to the point of long injuries?

5 subs is the way to go unless the number of matches in a season is cut.
