Chelsea midfielder Jorginho is happy with the new 3-5-2 Italy formation and assures beating England ‘fired us up’ for the Nations League showdown with Hungary. ‘The reconstruction process has already begun.’

It kicks off on Monday at the Puskas Arena in Budapest at 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT).

Marco Rossi’s Hungary are surprisingly top of the group on 10 points, having beaten England and Germany, but a victory from Italy would allow for a last-gasp overtake into the Final Four.

“We have to go out there with the same attitude we showed against England at San Siro, playing with humility and trying to win at all costs,” said Jorginho in his press conference.

That 1-0 win on Friday evening was secured thanks to a goal from Giacomo Raspadori, while the team was set out in a new 3-5-2 formation.

“It’s good to have an alternative that we can change to during the game or during a tournament. Some of our players have 4-3-3 at club level, others with three defenders, so I think this system is certainly doable. It’s interesting for the present and the future, I got along well with it.”

Italy could win the Nations League group and have relegated England, but the fact remains the Three Lions will be going to the 2022 World Cup and the Azzurri won’t.

“After everything that happened, it was a struggle, but the game against England really fired us up and gave us more motivation. I try to learn from past mistakes and disappointment, which is also what the coach is passing on to the players he calls up.

“I felt something different in that game and I think the reconstruction process has already begun. Now we’ve got to continue along this path.

“We have this opportunity to win the group and it’s up to us to take it. Hungary have proved themselves to be tough opponents and they’ll have passionate support from the crowd tomorrow.”

Hungary have done better on their travels than on home turf, winning 4-0 away to England and on Friday 1-0 in Germany.

“I was not surprised by their victory over Germany, as they’ve been doing well for a while,” added Jorginho.

“We must be ready with humility and respect for a Hungary side that is really doing very well.”

  1. It should have begun after the Euros. There were upgrades available for Mancini during the World Cup qualifying and he never used them. For example having Immobile at least as a benchwarmer would have been a good start.

  2. Exactly Stefano, he has been shocked into introducing them now. I am afraid his caution probably caused the failure to qualify.

  3. Should start by kicking out the one who missed two penalties that costed Italy the World Cup qualification!

  4. Italy could win the Nations League group and have relegated England, but the fact remains the Three Lions will be going to the 2022 World Cup and the Azzurri won’t.

Italy have won EURO’20 is a fact too.
You English always make my day.

  5. England may be going to the world cup but there not bloody winning it with that clown in charge 🤣😂🤣😂
