Italy star Jorginho looked absolutely devastated after missing a crucial penalty kick against Switzerland.

The former Napoli Regista turned up for a late spot-kick at the Stadio Olimpico but sent it over the bar.

Had he scored it, one point in the last group stage game against Northern Ireland would have been enough for Italy to qualify for the 2022 World Cup.

The Chelsea playmaker missed the third penalty kick in a row for the Azzurri, the second one against Switzerland. The other one was against England in the penalty shootout of the UEFA Euro 2020 Final.

Jorginho looked absolutely distressed immediately after missing the spot-kick and a few minutes later, when the referee blew the final whistle.

Leonardo Bonucci tried to cheer him up, but the Juventus defender could do nothing to console his teammate.

Mancini: ‘Jorginho was right to take penalty’

The Azzurri remain on top of Group C on even points with Switzerland, but with a better goal difference.

The Swiss host Bulgaria on Monday, while Italy travel to Northern Ireland.

“We missed a penalty in the first leg and one in the return, these things happen,” Mancini said in the post-match interview with RAI Sport.

“Jorginho felt like kicking it and it’s right that he did. He is one of the penalty takers in the team.”

  1. Time to stop taking them. GKs have studied him and he’s also nervous when taking them now since he’s missed some recently. He even changed his usual style but still missed. Let others like Berardi take them from now on.

  2. Three strikes and you’re out. Jorginho needs to move aside as the main penalty taker in the team. Almost cost us the Euro final and potentially qualification for Qatar – not good enough to miss 3 in a row. It should now go to Bonucci.

  3. Well n Ireland going to give them a hard time no way they win by more than a goal if they even win. Swiss will win 4-0 or 5-0 easy now

  4. I hate these silly routines and step ups makes my bowels shake from side to side knowing he will miss and it came out.

  5. The Chelsea playmaker missed the third penalty kick in a row for the Azzurri,

    Envelope pls…
Jorginho is to stop taking penalties effective immediately

He looked nervous and I said he will miss that and sure enough he did. I also said that about Locatelli when he took a pen and he also missed. I knind of know what I am talking about here.

I have written extensively about the clinical factor with Italy and will not be repeating myself here. Look at Chiesa a few moments before over the bar. Conversely look at Kane under Conte just scored 3 goals.

  6. I’ve been saying it for 2 months that Jorgi needs to be off PK Duty in favor of Bonucci. He has cost us both matches versus our direct opponent. 4 Points down the drain. But yet for CFC he is automatic this season. If the voting for Ballon D’Or hasn’t been done, then this seals it that he won’t win it.

If this was Qualifiers for the European Championships, we would be at the Playoffs, as FIFA and UEFA differ in their Tie Breakers.

Yet again, a goal conceded. Much too many in the last 10 matches or so for my liking.

Since September they have been making this a lot harder than it needs to be. 3 Draws in 7 Matches is too many.

Ridiculous performance in what they considered a must win.

Still, I am a sucker for punishment when it comes to this team. Since I have absolutely no faith in them doing thelr own dirty work — FORZA BULGARIA.

  7. And, No. You aren’t getting to me. Some pathetic shit with bad teeth eating mince pie on a rainy island CANNOT. But it does turn this decent place into a cesspool. My compliments, Solo Inter, and all your aliases.

  8. dangerboy relax do not get rattled we can still make the WC and do not let the anger overcome you with racist outbursts. We cannot have racism in football. I am so disappointed in you. That might happen in your state but cut it out here. Go have a drink and a slice of pizza pie from mama sid’s in Athens Georgia. Stay strong for the Lazio game init.

  9. Don’t ‘WE’ anything.

You and I are not the same anything. Capische, off-white trash?

Go take a knee if you are offended with my calling you out for the troll that you are.

  10. The website will remove racist remarks dangerboy. I agree let us not make this a cesspit with your disgusting racist remarks. Reading the bible and practicing Tai Chi can help you with your anger issues.✊

  11. Took it down?

    Nope. FI did.

By doing so they are showing the rest of the contributors here that trolling is allowed. By you. ‘Solo Inter‘ and his multiple personalities. Seek help, son.

But understand one thing, Limey. Despite today’s result, it still isn’t coming home.

  12. Wah Gwaan dboy you have to channel in the anger like Fury burying your guy Wilder for trash talking other people. So shameful that you are racist and FYI I am not white so educate yourself first you RASSCLAAT.

  13. England always gets easy group and are on the way. Spain don’t need any help but Sweden helped them being awful against Georgia. And we keep shooting ourselves in the foot!!

  14. I am woke with an itchy racist trigger finger here 24/7 and get rattled. I thought I was a big boy but I need my training wheels. I am sorry for being a racist.

  15. Jorginho was a one-trick pony as a penalty taker. Goalkeepers figured out his gimmick, and once they were no longer fooled by his little hop, he had no momentum with which to put power behind the strike. He shouldn’t even be a penalty taker in a shootout. This guy is the most overrated player in the world.

Being unable to beat Switzerland twice—especially this one in Rome—is embarrassing. The lineup was uninspired, to say the least. Belotti and Emerson are not worthy of a place in the squad. Verratti, Pellegrini, Spinazzola, and Lazzari were missed.

Now the Swiss can enjoy a pleasant picnic at home with the Bulgarians while the Azzurri need a win in Belfast.

  16. Ah too bad and very frustrating. If we didnt have such a bad start could have been avoided. Complaceny? Maybe.

  17. Roy, you are right – England does always get the easy group.. look into the history of their groups..I swear San Marini is in their group every qualification. It should be investigated!

  18. Wanted to add few more points –

    1) I’m not angry against Jorghino for missing the penalty but angry because of him taking it. He should have declined knowing there are players in better form to take it. He wanted to rectify his last miss .. but why make it about himself?? Swiss are a strong side and opportunities are at a premium with qualification at stake. Recently he has been talking a lot and is coming across as too full of himself .. whether on the Ballon d’or matter or recently talking on how he was relieved during Euro Final seeing that it was Saka who was going to take the crucial next kick after his miss and he was sure of him missing it … why say such a thing?!

    2) Why’s Ventura bringing himself to focus during Italy’s Qualifiers?? Last round of qualifiers he made a comment on the qualification and yesterday few hours before the crucial qualifier he announced his retirement!!

  19. another point i want to add of the squandered points…Italy should have already qualified with these 2 last games. would of been a great opportunity to give starters a break and give the bench a chance and for younger players get some experience while maybe experiment with the attack.

give Sirigu and Meret a start in goal, give Scamacca a test run.

its gonna be interesting on sunday.

  20. The fact that he instantly turned to look at the ground, as if to blame the pitch, tells you a lot about him.
Compare that to how Baggio reacted…

This penalty was all about him, it was very personal. He should not have taken it.

  21. There were 4 years between 2006 – 2010 the Euros were in July it’s hardly comparable to Lippi relying on the old guard…

This isnt a Mancini issue this is typical Azzurri

  22. he looked super nervous taking that pk. you find that players that take that stutter step pk struggle well their technique gets found out. bonucci really should take the pks. even berardi has a nice conversion rate of pks

  23. I knew it as he was hugging the ball at the spot kick, and Mancini was shouting “Don’t let him kick it”.
The are many that have come back from PK misses …Roberto di Baggio….Luigi Di Biagio ….Simone Zaza was never heard about again.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R56e0rC-xBE
Great game PK:101 and yet Italia looses another PK shoot out

  24. I agree with the papers-
    start bedardi tonali that scamacca,
bedardi always stirs excitement up front, he’s a sort of Giroud as pulls defenders
    tonai is impressive, quick
    scamacca good

I suppose we can keep Chiesa in there, but plz no cannon balls from midfield and less aggression on kicking balls to avoid going wide

kind of on the fence with Insigne

As for Jorgie we need to get him a pet chicken to calm his frayed nerves

penalties only have bonucci touch that

Tomorrow when I blow the whistle I will need all of the azzuri to dive into a pool full of lime juice to offset any monkey wrench NI has planned

And then play as though it were Belgium in front of you, if you can beat Belgium you can beat anybody
