Italy international Jorginho is climbing up Mikel Arteta’s pecking order at Arsenal and is chosen especially when the Spanish coach wants ‘to exert more control.’

Football London has analysed Jorginho’s recent performances with the Gunners, highlighting that the 32-year-old Italian midfielder has been ‘largely outstanding’ over the last few weeks.

“The Italian has proved himself as a reliable and quality option at the base of the Arsenal midfield when Arteta has wanted to exert more control. This has particularly been the case in big games like the win against Liverpool earlier this month,” wrote Kaya Kaynak.

Jorginho played 90 minutes in Saturday’s 4-1 victory over Newcastle and has made 16 Premier League appearances with the Gunners this season.

Football London notes that Jorginho is becoming increasingly important in the Arsenal squad, so much so Thomas Partey no longer seems undroppable now that the Ghana international is coming back from an injury.

Jorginho is praised for his leadership and quality, and even if the ex-Napoli star has only had 0.76 progressive carries this season compared to Partey’s 1.23 from 2022-23. However, the Italian has a pass completion rate of 89.7% this term, while his teammate had 87.2%, last season.

Jorginho’s Arsenal contract runs out in June, but Gunners have an option to extend it until 2025.
