Italy and Chelsea midfielder Jorginho is nominated for the UEFA Men’s Player of the Year award and Roberto Mancini is up for Men’s Coach of the Year.

Jorginho is in the three-man shortlist with Chelsea teammate N’Golo Kante and Manchester City’s Kevin de Bruyne.

This is another potential step towards Ballon d’Or glory for Jorginho, who in the 2020-21 season won the Champions League at Chelsea and UEFA EURO 2020 with Italy.

Nobody other than fellow Brazilian-Italian Emerson Palmieri has won so much silverware in the current campaign.

Italy boss Mancini is also on the shortlist for the UEFA Men’s Coach of the Year award after leading the Azzurri to their first major trophy since the 2006 World Cup.

He did so with an unbeaten 34-match run, reviving a squad that had not even qualified for the 2018 World Cup.

Mancio will be up against Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola and Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel.

The winners will be announced at the Champions League group stage draw ceremony on August 26 in Istanbul, Turkey.

This short-list was chosen by a jury composed of 24 coaches of national teams who participated in EURO 2020, along with 80 coaches of clubs in the group stages of the Champions League and Europa League, plus 55 journalists from UEFA’s member associations.

  1. I’m confused. What about Gigio and Chiellini? Equally as critical as Jorginho, even if not more at critical moments. Why only Jorginho? De Bruyne? In man city’s hour of need in the champions league final, he was woeful until being put out of his misery by Ruediger.

  2. @Rosario, Giglio and Chiellini were just as important for Italy, but what sets Jorginho apart is that he’s also won the Champions League and the Super League. Actually, I would argue that Jorginho is Italy’s most important player right now. He’s instrumental to Mancini’s approach, providing the platform with his outstanding composure, orchestration and a protective shield in front of the defence with his brilliant positioning.

  3. @bruno.

Belgium, Austria up to an extend and Spain broke thru that so called protective shield. Gigio make massive saves vs Belgium, one outstanding save vs Austria, and was crucial when it counted in the penalty shootouts vs Spain and England. And he did also win the player of the tournament. Not Jorginho.

  4. @bruno.

36 year old Chiellini had Kane and Lukaku in his pocket.

As for the super cup – it was a one off match which was 50/50 and won on pens. 100% recognise his contributions in the champions league, but this once again UEFA bias vs Italian players. It will be more fashionable for them to promote the massively overhyped Kante, who was pretty average in the euro’s not to mentioned outclassed by Renato in their match vs France, and bypassed multiple times vs the Swiss, and a Brazilian born Italian. This instead of true leaders like Chiellini, and Gigio who as I said, was the player of the tournament.
