Betis star Joaquin reveals that José Mourinho wanted to bring him to Chelsea: ‘I respect him and his career.’

The ex-Fiorentina winger started in Betis’ 2-1 win over Roma at the Stadio Olimpico being subbed off after 60 minutes last night.

The ex-Spain international hugged Mourinho once he left the pitch, even before going to the Betis’ dugout.

“I respect Mourinho and his career, I am proud that he hugged me because it means that he feels the same,” Joaquin told DAZN after the game. “Once, he wanted to sign me at Chelsea.”

The Special One coached Chelsea in two different moments of his career. First from 2004 until 2007 and then from 2013 until 2015.

Joaquin scored seven goals in 71 appearances across all competitions with Fiorentina, where he played from 2013 until 2015.

“We’ve known each other for a long time, we hugged each other and said nice things. He is an important man,” continued the Betis winger.

Joaquin smiled when asked how long he would still play for: ‘This is my last year,’ he said.

Roma have lost two games out of thee in Europa League and Mourinho admitted last night that the Giallorossi can no longer aim to win the group.

Betis are the Group C leaders with nine points, followed by Ludororets (four) and the Giallorossi.

  1. how is this guy still playing he’s 41yrs old – still playing as a winger – he’s not mobile anymore

  2. What a poor poor showing by Roma last night. We look at the players, the coach and value it at a certain level but in games like his we can see that Roma is not as good as some people think. They are still missing that mental strength. When the game was 1-1 Betis should have been the team content with a point but it was Roma who were playing for a draw. When they should have been pressing for a goal. Or maybe Italian teams are not at the fitness levels to press at the end of games? Too much time spent on tactics? Must be some reason why good Italian continue to suffer against lesser know European teams that on paper are not as strong.
