Joaquin was wanted by several top clubs, but Fiorentina appear to have clinched a deal worth €3m plus performance-related bonuses with Malaga.
He is prepared to take a big pay cut, spreading his €3m per season wages across a three-year contract.
The 31-year-old has over 50 caps for Spain and shot to fame at Betis and Valencia before joining Malaga in 2011.
At the same time, Spanish left-back Marcos Alonso is said to be in Italy undergoing a medical this weekend.
The 23-year-old grew up in the Real Madrid academy and is out of contract following his spell at Bolton Wanderers.
