Cagliari forward Joao Pedro defended coach Walter Zenga after the 2-0 win against Juventus. ‘He hasn’t seen his family for months’.

The Rossoblu had a great start to the 2019-20 season but an 11-game winless streak in Serie A saw them plummet down the table.

Rolando Maran was replaced by Walter Zenga in March but didn’t lead his team in an official match until June because of the coronavirus lockdown.

Zenga stayed in Sardinia and Joao Pedro has claimed it shows how much the new coach cares about his job at the Sardegna Arena.

Zenga stayed in Sardinia and Joao Pedro has claimed it shows how much the new coach cares about his job at the Sardegna Arena.

“I’m happy for everything,” Joao Pedro told Sky Sport Italia after the win against the newly crowned champions. “He has been closed up for months, he hasn’t seen his family for a while. It means that he cares a lot.

Cagliari have been linked with a host of coaches ahead of next season but the Brazilian forward, who has scored 18 goals in 36 Serie A matches this term, talked Zenga’s case.

“Anything can happen in football, but we have seen how well he makes us play. We must put that into account.

Both the 28-year-old and his teammate Giovanni Simeone have reached double figures for the Rossoblu in 2019-20.

“It’s nice to see two players like that, then we’ll see when Leonardo [Pavoletti] returns from injury. I’m very excited.”
