The FIGC’s decision to uphold Romelu Lukaku’s one-game ban following his sending off against Juventus has proven predictably controversial, and Roc Nation have spoken out to defend the Inter strike.

The 29-year-old Belgian striker was shown two yellow cards in Inter’s 1-1 draw with the Bianconeri in the first leg of the Coppa Italia semi-finals – the first for foul in the 80th minute and the second for a ‘provocative celebration’ after his penalty goal in the 95th minute.

Lukaku celebrated his penalty by placing his finger over his lips in a ‘shh’ gesture whilst putting one finger in his ear. The Inter forward had been racially abused by a section of the Juventus support throughout that match, leading to bans to those caught.

What proved further controversial was the fact that Lukaku was the only one punished by the FIGC, with Juventus’ appeal against the one-game closure of their Curva Sud accepted by the Italian FA.

Michael Yormark, the president of Lukaku’s representatives Roc Nation, spoke out to defend their client, sharing their anger with the FIGC’s decision.

“It is worrying to hear that the FIGC’s national appeal court has chosen to uphold Romelu Lukaku’s ban. This shows that more needs to be done by all football bodies to protect players on the pitch.

“This further fuels our desire for change. Roc Nation will not give up this fight. We will continue to challenge the authorities on all fronts. Enough is enough.”
