Gianluca Scamacca gets his debut Italy call-up, while Nicolò Zaniolo returns after injury for the 2022 World Cup qualifiers against Bulgaria, Switzerland and Lithuania.

Coach Roberto Mancini has called up 34 players for the three matches, the first since the Nazionale triumphed at Wembley in UEFA EURO 2020.

The Azzurri are unbeaten in 34 competitive games, just 90 minutes off the all-time record held by Spain, set from 2007 to 2009.

Italy are top of their World Cup qualifying group C after winning all three fixtures in March.

Of the 26 players at EURO 2020, 25 are present in the squad that will start work on Monday, save for injured Leonardo Spinazzola.

Sassuolo-owned striker Scamacca gets his first senior call-up, while Roma man Zaniolo returns after his injury nightmare of two torn anterior cruciate ligaments in one year.

Italy will play Bulgaria on September 2 at the Stadio Artemio Franchi in Florence.

They’ll then visit Switzerland at the St Jakob Park in Basel on Sunday September 5, before hosting Lithuania on Wednesday September 8 at the Mapei Stadium in Reggio-Emilia.

10 thought on “Italy World Cup qualifiers: Scamacca first, Zaniolo returns”
  1. Why does he continue to call up Kean with all the other better talent available. Politano would have been better option.

  2. Good squad. I hope Mancini can keep improving under Mourinho? Lazzari could be a good shout for his pace + I hope some more of the youngsters like Scamacca, Kean, Raspadori, Tonali at Milan + Vignato can have breakout seasons too. Despite already being winners I think Italy still have a lot of potential to get even better + continue to grow. Bastoni, Zaniolo Sensi, Pellegrini + Castrovilli. Thing’s look good.

  3. Hope give new striker chance …. imobili and belloti were done bad in euro tournament….we want to see youngsters

  4. no Calabria?
Kean what a joke , he is too disruptive , sulks it showed against San Marino.
I hope Mancini doesnt do what Lippi and Prandelli done in the past, tried to stay loyal where maybe picking on merit.
