The Italy Women squad have released a statement after their disappointing exit from the World Cup, admitting the ‘regrets are very strong’.

The Azzurri only needed a draw against South Africa to progress to the knockout stages of the tournament in Australia and New Zealand, but fell 3-2 in an incredibly painful loss, leaving them third in Group G.

Coach Milena Bertolini is expected to leave her role as Italy Women coach and the players have been much criticised by the press and supporters, with many hoping to see redemption after the poor campaign at Euro 2022.

The Italy Women squad posted an open letter through defender Elena Linari’s Instagram page, giving their point of view and expressing their regrets.

“We girls have always put our face forward without ever backing down. Never. Taking responsibility, always.

“This time, however, we also want to express our point of view. The regrets are still very strong because the desire for redemption in this World Cup of ours was great.

“We knew we were coming from a disappointing European Championship and we learned from our mistakes.

“Many things were said yesterday evening, but the only thing we share and feel is ours concerns ‘the understanding that has been created between us’.

“We have never been afraid, but only felt little trust. All of this wasn’t enough because something else was obviously missing on the pitch.

“In the national team there is a block of 16 girls from Roma and Juventus who have done something important in the Champions League.

“We therefore think it is legitimate to ask ourselves why a national team made up of that group of players, enhanced by players from some important clubs and talented youngsters, struggle so much first at a European Championship and then at a World Cup.

“We are convinced that we could have achieved different results if only we had been able to do so.

“We will work even harder to improve internationally but given that mistakes can always be learned from, we hope for a more present future, worthy of the growth of our football to be able to express ourselves 100% and represent our country to the best of our abilities.”

Women’s football in Italy is still in the early stages of its growth, with Serie A only becoming fully professional last season. Only 10 teams compete in the topflight and receive a fraction of the funding of their male counterparts.

  1. Really?…..
Come now….there’s was nothing missing other than scoring more than your opponents.
    Be proud and move on….
    Grazie
    Forza Italia!!!!

  2. Let me post a moderate statement.

You were all rubbish!!!!!!! Other than the centre back please retire.

  3. Sorry Tony what are they to be proud of how they had 8 goals kicked against them in 2 games and then post a ludicrous post without any humility questioning why they do not get paid like professional men. Simple answer!!!! Results against men and under 16s boys teams are shocking. Australia lost against the under 16s 7-0. The USA team lost 24-0 against retired 3rd division payers. Says it all!!!!!
