Italy will wear black armbands against Wales on Sunday at Euro 2020 in tribute to legend Giampiero Boniperti.

The forward spent his entire playing career at Juventus and represented Italy on 38 occasions, scoring eight goals.

He died of heart failure just a couple of weeks shy of his 93rd birthday.

Boniperti played for the Azzurri at the 1950 and 1954 World Cup tournaments, as well as the 1951-52 Olympic Games.

“Boniperti’s death represents an enormous loss,” said FIGC President Gabriele Gravina.

“An extraordinary player, an impeccable director, we lose one of the most representative figures in Italian football.

“His competence, style and determination taught us so much, we will never forget him.”

The Italian Football Federation requested the opportunity to wear black armbands in Boniperti’s honour and UEFA have given their consent.

The Azzurri complete Group A at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome on Sunday afternoon against Wales, kicking off at 17.00 UK time.
