1982 World Cup winner Franco Causio believes Italy’s national team head coach Luciano Spalletti should have tendered his resignation after the disappointment of EURO 2024 this summer.

Causio calls for Spalletti resignation

“If I’m honest, if I were Spalletti, I would have gone to Gravina first and then to the press to resign,” the former Juventus winger said in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport published on Saturday.

The former Napoli coach has been in the job for little under a year now, but was unable to get the team firing in time for the EUROs this summer.

Though the Azzurri scraped through the groups, largely thanks to a 98th minute intervention from Mattia Zaccagni against Croatia, they were eventually knocked out after a 2-0 defeat to Switzerland in the round of 16 in Berlin.

FIGC President Gravina gave Spalletti his public backing in a press conference immediately after Italy’s exit from the EUROs, but many back at home feel that there should be another change in the managerial hotseat.

Causio knows exactly who he would like to replace Spalletti as head coach of the Italy national team.

“The one I mentioned before, Max Allegri,” he said when asked who he thinks should take charge of the national team.

6 thought on “Italy World Cup winner takes damning stance on CT Spalletti”
  1. Not a big fan of Allegri’s style but he has won alot more than the current CT. Spaletti should have gone along with Gravina. They are both clearly out of their depth, in particular Spaletti who was at times delusional during the Euros. Like most fans and pundits have said, it was the worst performance by any Nazionale in the history of Italian football. That alone should have been enough to be fired.

  2. The Italian team had individuals with skill and know how to play. Did there talent match the better teams in tourney? I don’t have an answer to that question. The answer I do have is the coaching Italy had was inferior to the completion coaches.

  3. Nations League will tell us everything we need to know about Spaletti going forward. I m willing to give him a chance.

  4. Lorenzo He will be coaching; what other choice do we have? Let’s hope for the best. Italy does have talent

  5. The issue is time to train and rather then 26 the group sbould be 30 most althletes are not used to changes in playing style you need 20 weeks of being together to work and train

  6. Italy’s problem is not strikers , it’s creative playmaker, and goals from midfield so baldazi,Bonaventurea, the return of Lorenzo insigne, pellegrini, orladi ,and others should be allowed to compete fair and square and may the best 3 win .
