The European and South American champions face-off on Wednesday evening in these Italy vs. Argentina predictions. The Finalissima may not have the prestige of its two feeder competitions but it’s a significant fixture and will be a barometer for the Copa America winners ahead of the winter World Cup.
Italy vs. Argentina odds
1 – Argentina to win – 31/20
2 – Both teams to score – 9/10
3 – Under 2.5 goals scored – 4/7
4 – A draw at full-time – 2/1
5 – Lautaro Martinez to score anytime – 43/20
The 2022 Finalissima pits an Italy side in transition against an Argentina team very much on its last legs. Lionel Messi, Angel Di Maria and Nicolas Otamendi are most likely facing their final year of international football and will hope to sign off with as much silverware as possible.
Fortunately for the Albicelestes, they have a solid chance of lifting yet another trophy at Wembley as they come up against an Azzurri side in the midst of an overhaul. Wednesday evening marks Italy legend Giorgio Chiellini’s final match with the side as they look to rebuild following a failed World Cup qualification campaign.
For Roberto Mancini the game provides an opportunity to test out young talents, with the likes of Gianluca Scammacca, Giacomo Raspadori, Nicolo Zaniolo and Alessandro Bastoni all on the rise. However, in terms of their search for a win, the youngsters will be up against a team looking to hit their stride ahead of November’s tournament.
Argentina are very much on a high following last year’s Copa America and as always are up there amongst the best teams in the world. The Albiceleste haven’t lost a competitive match against their Wednesday opponents since 1987 and are our favourites to take a win yet again at Wembley.
That having been said, Mancini’s young side are not expected to role over against their more experienced opponents. Italy thrive against attacking sides that leave space in behind and will look to stretch Argentina’s defence with runs in behind. As a result, a bet on both teams to score could well pay off.
With the game closely contested the score-line is expected to remain relatively low. The two managers opt for conservative approaches to important matches as evidenced by the fact that both of last summer’s trophies were lifted on the back of penalty shoot-outs. Ahead of Wednesday’s clash, a bet on either another match to be decided from the spot, or simply on under 2.5 goals scored in 90 minutes could be a winner.
If any player is likely to break the deadlock, we back it to be Lautaro Martinez against his country of residence. The Inter sensation finished the season in fine form with four goals in his last four games and will benefit from the creativity of Messi and Di Maria.
