The Italy U-17 side have been crowned Champions of Europe after defeating Portugal by a margin of *3-0* in the final of the UEFA European Under-17 Championship on Wednesday evening.

Italy crowned U17 European Champions for the first time

First half goals from Roma-owned attacking midfielder Federico Coletta and Milan’s teenage sensation Francesco Camarda gave the Azzurrini a 2-0 lead by the 16th minute of Wednesday’s final. Camarda added his second of the night at the 50 minute mark.

The young Italians finished their Group with a 100% record, ending up on nine points after wins over Poland, Sweden and Slovakia.

They would go on to defeat England on penalties in the quarter-finals following a 1-1 draw in regulation time. It was Milan’s Mattia Liberali who got the Italian goal on that occasion.

Massimiliano Favi’s side would then go on to beat Denmark 1-0 in the semi-final after a 30th minute strike from the aforementioned Coletta.

It is the first time that Italy have won the Under-17 Championship. They had claimed the award once between 1982 and 2001, when the tournament was run at the Under-16 age category.

The original title came in the competition’s inaugural year in 1982, which was also hosted in Italy.

Five years later, in 1987, Italy were victorious in the final against the Soviet Union, but later had their title revoked after effectively fielding an ineligible player in Roberto Secci, who had been registered with an ‘irregular’ document.

  1. Get Camarda into senior squad..if he was English he’d in the England squad going to the Euros. If he’s good enough and he is them he’s old enough!!

  2. Leave it to AC Milan NOT to play any Italians in the senior squad. Una Vergognia! What a disgrace by AC Milan and the entire Seria A management!

  3. They are currently U-19 and U17 European Champions. They were also runners up at u20 World Cup. Start playing Italian players SERIE A.

  4. We need to get some of these guys in the senior squad NOW. Spain has a bunch of teenagers on their team, so why not us?

  5. The future is bright. As pointed out earlier U17 and U19 European champs plus U2O 2nd in the World.

Let us not forget still the reigning Euro champs.

As for Milan specifically, runner in UEFA Youth League and now spearheaded by Camarda Euro U17 champs. Time to give more time to the Italian talents in Milan

  6. While Carmada, Coletta and Liberali stood out, I notice a lot of players have great technical skills and good at one on one. Carmada needs to be promoted to senior team from now, he already has a strong build for that. He will probably the Vieri successor for Italy after 2 decades.

  7. Milan have a very exciting under-18 set-up. Now watch them lose all the best players because of penny-pinching on contracts….

  8. If the victorious u19 and u17 Azzurrini are from Barcelona academy , ironic that hosts of Serie A clubs would be lining up to buy these players….weird..
