According to Sky Sport Italia, FIFA are proposing modifications to the offside rule and they could be tested in Italy during the Under-18 matches.

The plans would allow for a ‘window’ of space between the body of the striker and defender, rather than the current extremely slender gap that is highlighted by VAR reviews.

It comes after protests about the so-called ‘armpit offside’ rulings, which disallow goals that do not have a genuine advantage for the forward.

The same report suggests that Italy have offered themselves as guinea pigs to test out the new system in the Under-18 Primavera tournament from next season.

It was Italy that first tested out the VAR technology too before it was adopted throughout European football.

  1. This is what Wenger proposed a while back and I think it’s a great idea. Some of the disallowed goals we see today are just ridiculous. This new rule will fix many things, but can they pull it off right? I mean, a window of space from which angle?

  2. @ Milan Fan,
Exactly, will they be able to pull it off right!?!

VAR was introduced to eliminate “obvious” refereeing mistakes in crucial aspects of the game.
instead it has many times been used to find X-ray precision offside situations while in other cases letting clear offside situations pass without VAR intervening.

Like there was not enough with Italian analyses of in game situations already by the media, now with this I reckon we will have even more to get angry about and feed all conspiracy theories since it will be typically Italian chaotic fashion.

VAR in it’s idea is good, however it’s not even used in a standardized way globally or even in a objective way.
The fun and thrill of the moment your team scores has died in Serie A.

  3. Agree with @nucleo, just more arbitrary judgements and questionable decisions. If the rules say the armpit is offside then its offside, don’t like it then change the rule.
