Whilst the Italian Football Federation hinted at their hope of having him change his mind to see out the two-year contract signed only weeks ago, attention has otherwise fallen on the list of potential replacements.
It is generally believed that four candidates are up for consideration – Massimiliano Allegri, Roberto Mancini, Luciano Spalletti and Francesco Guidolin – and that barring any surprises, one from this quartet will take the position.
However, La Stampa suggest there may be at least one surprise in the form of Roberto Baggio.
Whilst the 47-year-old left his previous position with the FIGC as technical director in less than positive circumstances, it is understood that ‘anything is possible’ at this time, with relation to his potential return.
Il Divin Codino, who attained his UEFA Pro Licence qualifications, is not the only outside candidate La Stampa list, as former Juventus and Italy defender Antonio Cabrini is also believed a wildcard. Cabrini is currently Coach of the Italy women’s national team.
Fabio Cannavaro has also suggested that he would be interested in the position if considered.
