Italy’s 3-0 win over Turkey saw the Azzurri consign a damning stat to the history books as they scored more than two goals in a European Championship fixture for the first time.

Roberto Mancini’s side dispatched Turkey in the first game of Euro 2020 via a Merih Demiral own goal and goals from Ciro Immobile and Lorenzo Insigne. Italy had previously played 39 European Championship fixtures without scoring more than two in a single game.

That includes when Italy won as hosts in 1968, reached the final in 2000 – when they were beaten by world champions France – and took the silver medal in 2012 as Spain triumphed in Vienna.

Italy recorded 24 shots in the win over Turkey, while Turkey managed only one in the course of the 90 minutes. They next face Switzerland on Wednesday June 16 before rounding off their group stage campaign with a game against Wales on June 20. Both games will take place at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, which was also the location of the group-opening win over Turkey.
