Italy broke numerous records this evening, as they hadn’t lost their opening European Championship qualifier since 1974 and had lost to England in competitive matches only once.

The Azzurri were beaten 2-1 at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona in the opening EURO 2024 qualifier.

The Nazionale had not lost a single EURO qualifier since the 3-1 to France in 2006 and their last defeat at home in this tournament was 3-2 to Denmark in 1999.

Curiously, that loss to Denmark was also played in Naples, although at the time it was called the Stadio San Paolo.

The last time they lost the opening fixture in the qualifying campaign for the European Championship was 3-1 to the Netherlands in 1974.

They had lost to England only once before in competitive football, a 2-0 World Cup qualifier in November 1977, along with two draws and eight defeats.

England hadn’t won on Italian soil since a 3-2 friendly result in 1961.

  1. This is true however England threw you a lifeline by playing Maguire. He gifted you a goal and you still couldn’t get a draw or win against 10.
