Italy Lithuania celebrations

Italy have set a new all-time world record of 37 games unbeaten, leaving behind Brazil and Spain, after crushing Lithuania 5-0.

The Azzurri completed that run of results in this evening’s World Cup qualifier against Lithuania.

It began back on October 10, 2018, in a 1-1 friendly draw with Ukraine.

Roberto Mancini’s men have now strung together 30 wins and seven draws between Nations League, European Championship qualifiers, World Cup qualifiers, UEFA EURO 2020 tournament fixtures and friendlies.

Tonight’s victory puts the record beyond all doubt, because there had been some confusion over the previous best run in world football.

Brazil considered it to be 36 from 1993 to 1996, as there was some dispute over whether a 2-2 draw with Romania’s B team in September 1995 qualified as an official match.

Spain made it 35 games unbeaten between 2007 and 2009.

Meanwhile, Italy also retained their 100 per cent record playing in Reggio-Emilia, winning all four matches in this town.

Curiously, two of them were against Lithuania, as there was also a 4-0 result in 1995 with Gianfranco Zola’s hat-trick and an Alessandro Del Piero effort.

  1. What a difference a day makes, Italy wins big with the kids and the Swiss tie. The sun looks a little brighter no?

  2. To bad he didn’t mix it up in last two games with some of these guys they probably would have won all 3 games and pretty much qualified . Let’s hope they beat Swiss and n Ireland to seal the deal in November

  3. Hold off the celebrations. Brazil will probably appeal and claim victories on Xbox Live….

Haha love that! Haven’t they laid claim to go 36 games unbeaten with their last match against a Romania B team i think?

  5. technically i can say the streak can go on to the next world cup at 42 unbeaten. they definitely could go unbeaten the remainder of qualifying games and then win nations league v Spain and Belgium/France which is asking a lot, but they can doooo it. wouldnt that be something !!?

either way congrats… another high water mark with the streak at 37, which should stand for a long while.
