At least there is some positive news for Italian football, as a 3-2 victory over Uzbekistan sent Italy through to the Under-17 World Cup quarter-finals.

The Azzurrini will face Burkina Faso in the next phase of the competition on Friday afternoon, as the tournament continues in Qatar.

The star of the show in today’s match was Empoli talent Thomas Campaniello, who found the net in both the first and second half, around a temporary equaliser from Amirkhon Muradov.

Dauda Iddrisa, who is in the West Bromwich Albion academy, sealed it moments later with their third goal on the volley from a Jean Mambuku cross, meaning the Azizbek Erimbetov strike deep into stoppages was irrelevant.

Their next opponents will be Burkina Faso, who needed penalties to get the better of Uganda after a 1-1 draw.

Portugal swept Mexico aside 5-0, while Brazil and France drew 1-1, with the Selecao reaching the quarter-finals on a penalty shoot-out.

Switzerland remain unbeaten in the Under-17 World Cup and defeated the Republic of Ireland 3-1.
