Carlo Tavecchio says Italy will play their November friendly with Albania at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris to support victims of the recent floods in Genoa.

Severe flooding has hit the port city in recent days, with one man being killed, and city infrastructure sustaining €200m of damage.

In response to the crisis, the Italian Football Federation’s President has announced the intention that the Luigi Ferraris hosts the November 18 friendly, set to be played with Albania.

This is subject to final approval from Genoa and Sampdoria Presidents Enrico Preziosi and Massimo Ferrero, as well as Tommaso Ghirardi of Parma, whose Ennio Tardini stadium was originally due to host the Azzurri on that date.

“Football must always be sensitive in the face of tragedies which hurt the entire country,” said Tavecchio has commented in the FIGC’s Press release on the matter today.

“We are aware of the social role that we have, and that’s why we make this offer, as a tool for reconstruction and the first stage of returning to normality, through a concrete contribution and the support that the Azzurri and the entire football world will give the people of Liguria.”
