Roberto Mancini, the Italian national team and Gianluigi Donnarumma were amongst the winners at the Globe Soccer Awards 2021 today.

The Azzurri won the award for the Best National Team of the Year following their historic success at Euro 2020 earlier this year, bringing a smile to the faces of all Italians following a tough 18 months amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

FIGC president Gabriele Gravina discussed the win, saying ‘the secret of winning the European Championship was a combination of elements.

‘The technical quality of the players, the skill of the coach and above all the ability of all the fans to push the team with the right mix of emotions and feelings that turned our team into a big family.’

Azzurri coach Roberto Mancini won the award for the Best Coach of the Year following his work in the summer, bringing Italy to European success for the first time since 1968. He touched on the victory, saying ‘I am very happy to have won this award, we have always believed we could win the European Championship.’

Juventus defender Leonardo Bonucci won the award for the Best Defender of the Year, beating out teammate Giorgio Chiellini, following his decisive performances for the Azzurri during Euro 2020, as well as his consistency for the Bianconeri.

He was overjoyed to win the award, noting ‘I am proud to have won this award. I dedicate it to my teammates, my coaches and my family, who always help and support me on and off the pitch.’

Finally, Gianluigi Donnarumma, who joined Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer in the summer following his departure from Milan, won the award for the Best Goalkeeper of the Year, being a key part of the Azzurri’s success at Euro 2020.
