Italy made history this evening setting the all-time record for 36 international games unbeaten, although there is some debate in Brazil about whether this is a new best or merely equalling it.

The Azzurri are now unbeaten since their 1-1 friendly draw with Ukraine on October 10, 2018.

That is a run of 29 wins and seven draws between Nations League, European Championship qualifiers, World Cup qualifiers, UEFA EURO 2020 fixtures and friendlies.

They were held 0-0 by Switzerland tonight in Basel, as Jorginho saw his penalty saved by Yann Sommer.

Spain had their unbeaten streak of 35 games between 2007 and 2009.

However, some in Brazil insist their run actually stretched to 36 matches, wanting to include the 2-2 draw with Romania’s B team in September 1995.

If that is included, then the Selecao went unbeaten for 36 games from 1993 to 1996.

Either way, Italy are in the all-time history books of football and have the opportunity to put the issue beyond doubt against Lithuania on Wednesday in another World Cup qualifier.

10 thought on “Italy make history with 36-game unbeaten run”
  1. Brazil says… what does the international community recognize as the record, they say 35 games. Brazil can say anything they want.

They will be lucky to qualify for the World Cup, garbage playing. No group cohesion, no build up play for a goal. The pen was beyond awful.
They are completely self sabotaging themselves.

I don’t know has the coach staff mentioned to them that there are 3 forwards another attacking midfield, so they should all go and attack as unit, they are either lazy or disinterested instead of being hungry for goal they leave one person alone in attack , the rest are a miles away standing there watching. When they do have 2 or 3 participates, they fool with ball selflessly decided to go for goal with some half assed attempt instead one, two pass for goal.

Watch England game two days ago, watch Germany or Spain today is it 3 or 4 I in attack , swarm in the opponents box , they don’t sit back and watch, waiting to see if it’s a goal.

  2. Situations like this shows the seriousness and the wonderful project in this current rebuild that’s ongoing in the azurri’s team that has suffered a lot more times from their too many exits in the euros, the world cup and most embarrassingly, not even making it to the world cup finals in 2018 under the very bad tutelage of Mr Bonaventura who’s constant pride and refusal to field the very best proved very very costly for the azurris but as God would have it and as the saying goes that; ” tough times don’t last but tough people do”, the hand of the clock was turned out immediately in favour of the azurris who needs a miracle from any source in order to resurrect an almost gone azurri team.
All hail the new project I believe was spearheaded by the the FIGC, a body that for sees to the national team’s successes and all hail Mancini who’s mastery and enviable art proved very vital to rescuing his come country from the shambles they’ve been pitched in a very long period of bad times though he’s success at the helm of affairs especially those of his exploits in the just concluded euros, have all but added some real light to his adorable success packed CV and for this reason I say; ” FORZA AZURRI, FORZA FIGC, FORZA MANCINI and of course, FORZA MYSELF for a very wonderful contribution here hahahahahaha…

  3. Check out Juve from the 6 on YouTube! Help me grow my channel!

I’m a Juventus fan from Canada (Toronto) and just love sharing my opinion on team!

    Anyways,

The record was 35. Everyone says it was 35. I didn’t hear about this 2-2 draw with Romania until now. Regardless, if that is said by pundits in Brazil, its because they can’t stand not having a record in soccer and they can’t stand that record is gone and taken over by Italy!!

As much as I would have like to see more convincing scorelines to match and get the record, the record is ours and i couldn’t be prouder of gli Azzurri!

  4. Just read the Amah Samuel’s comment and needs to be corrected that it was Ventura and not Bonaventura who failed. I feel that comments are too harsh. Italy did play well, they just didn’t score which can be sorted. As mentioned before September has never been a good month for us. Most of the comments are writing us off as though we have failed to reach the Qatar 22. Well its not over until the Fat Lady Sings. I think Italy will do well against Switzerland. Also lets not forget that Switzerland need to win against Northern Ireland which is not going to be easy! We need to win against Lithuania and then concentrate for the Nations League and then in November against the Swiss and Northern Irish. Sempre Forza Italia.

  5. this result wouldn’t have been so bad if they had at least beaten Bulgaria. Spinnazola is big loss he would make those runs and cut inside which after he got injured you can see the difference in those last 4 games without him

  6. Man, who cares. Is there a medal for that? No. So go and finally score some goals and win a match and make a strong statement next winter.

  7. Sammy, you’re sounding a bit unstable… it’s September… lots of teams have rust at this time of the year… France just tied some lowly team… And Spain is in Second behind Sweden! I’ll bet you’re an England supporter still sore that the best footballing nation in the world whipped you’re butts…
