On this day 15 years ago, Italy beat Germany in the semi-finals of the 2006 World Cup and Alessandro Del Piero has remembered that day, sending a message to Roberto Mancini’s lads.

It was one of the most epic nights in the history of Italian football as Marcello Lippi’s Italy beat the host country Germany in the semis of the 2006 World Cup at the Westfalenstadion in Dortmund.

Fabio Grosso put Italy ahead with just one minute to go in the extra time and Alessandro Del Piero doubled the Azzurri’s lead after a lethal counter-attack.

The Juventus legend remembered that night in Dortmund with an Instagram post: “It was a magical and unforgettable night,” the former No.10 wrote.

“A goal and the victory against Germany to pack our suitcase for Berlin. Yesterday, as today, Forza Azzurri. Let’s go to Wembley to conquer the Final.”

Vincenzo Iaquinta, who scored a goal in the debut game of the 2006 World Cup against Ghana, also shared his thoughts about that legendary victory. Or at least, he tried.

“I would like to say and write so many words regarding this day here, but the emotion I feel is still so strong that I can not say and write anything. It’s something inexplicable.”

Italy went on to win the 2006 World Cup, beating France on penalties in the Final.
