Italy World Cup winner Alessandro Altobelli warns that Luciano Spalletti’s project as the Azzurri national team coach is ‘over’ already.

The Azzurri were knocked out of the EURO 2024 Round of 16, and there are still plenty of reactions to a disappointing result.

“We had to do more; we were the only ones responsible,” Altobelli, a 1982 World Cup winner, told Virgilio Sport.

“We qualified for the knock-out stage at the last second and then we were dominated by Switzerland. They are a good team, but some questions need an answer if we can’t beat them.”

Is it mostly Spalletti’s responsibility?

“I’ve heard him complain because he didn’t have enough time, but if you are offered the national team and you think players are not up to the task, you should not accept,” argued the former striker.

Does this mean the ex-Napoli boss should have resigned?

“Not many coaches have done so; courage is needed. He and Gravina said they want to continue the project, but this one is over already. The coach is praised when the team wins, but when there are defeats, he must accept criticism,” concluded Altobelli.

  1. Yes, Spalletti and Gravina must go! The players had no faith in his tactics and Spalletti failed to motivate and create the right environment for the players. Further, Spalletti’s inclusions of Fagioli on the team was not liked by the other players who they see as a snitch. This created a bad team dynamic. Spalletti is not cut out to manage a national team.

  2. we cant beat spaiin portugal england germany swizerland croatia etc etc we should have refused to play in the nations league we will loose our ranking will go even lower

  3. Spalletti was everyone’s first choice back in September. I think he should continue for now but if there is no cohesion during the Nations League games, the Italian FA should step in before World Cup qualifying.
