Italy international Lorenzo Insigne was forced off the pitch in the first half of Toronto FC’s season opener against DC United on Sunday.

The former Napoli captain fell on the floor in pain at minute 31 due to a suspected muscle injury. There was no contact with any opponent.

Toronto FC coach Bob Bradley told reporters at the end of the game that Insigne had “felt something in the lower leg [and] couldn’t continue.”

The Italy international was subbed off at minute 34 and looked visibly upset on the bench, keeping his hands on his face.

Insigne will undergo medical examinations in the coming hours to identify the nature of the injury and know how long he could remain out of action.

His compatriot and teammate Federico Bernardeschi got his name on the scoresheet by converting a spot-kick at minute 66, but it was not enough for Toronto FC to avoid defeat seeing DC United score twice in the stoppages, earning a 3-2 win.

Insigne has scored six goals in 12 appearances with Toronto FC.
