Italy international and Inter centre-back Francesco Acerbi is closing in on a return to full-time action with the Nerazzurri after withdrawing from Luciano Spalletti’s national team squad for the European Championships in Germany this summer.

Acerbi back in training with Inter

According to updates from Tuttosport and Gianluca Di Marzio, the 36-year-old is now back in training on a personalised programme, but the club have confirmed that they will not rush him back unnecessarily.

Inter have a series of pre-season friendlies lined up over the coming weeks, including ones against Al-Ittihad in Monza in August and against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge a few days later, but it has not yet been confirmed whether Acerbi will play any part in them.

The veteran defender underwent surgery on his groin on June 3 and was forced to withdraw from the Italy national team camp as a result. He had been expected to play an important role within the squad before his departure.

Acerbi is now into the final year of his contract with Inter, and is also expected to remain on board for the 2024-25 campaign, following the Scudetto-winning 2023-24 season, in which he featured on 29 occasions.
