The death toll over the last 24 hours is 285, significantly lower than yesterday’s tally of 323, and for the first time in a month there were under 100 deaths in Lombardy alone.

It’s the lowest figure since March 14, taking the total since the crisis began to 27,967, but the other statistics are even more telling.

The number of new positive cases was 1,872, despite there being 68,456 tests performed in that period.

Another 4,693 were given the all-clear, meaning a record drop of current positive cases by 3,106 to 101,551.

There are now only 1,694 patients in intensive care, a drop of 101 since yesterday.

This comes just hours after the President of the ISS health institute Silvio Brusaferro announced that Italy’s R value in all regions was under 1 (specifically 0.9), meaning the pandemic is petering out with one person infecting less than one other on average.

Italy will move into Phase Two of the coronavirus pandemic response from May 4, easing the lockdown, but maintaining social distancing measures.
