As the Federation pushes to ensure a minimum number of Italians play in Serie A and at youth level, the clubs ask to scrap the existing limits on foreign players instead.

The failure to qualify for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups prompted another look inward from the Italian football authorities, with very different ideas on what to do next.

FIGC President Gabriele Gravina complained bitterly after the 1-0 defeat to North Macedonia that coach Roberto Mancini had “little to work with” because so few young Italian players are given a chance at club level.

He suggested introducing new rules ordering clubs to use teams that are at least 30 per cent Italian, both at senior and above all at youth level.

Meanwhile, La Repubblica claims Serie A sides requested at a recent meeting to expand the number of non-EU players they can have in the side from two to eight.

It only goes to highlight the difficulties Italian football is facing with the tussle between clubs and the Nazionale.

  1. The Non EU clause is ridiculous. If the player is not from Italy, what does it matter if they are from France, USA or Brazil. With the current rule we are allowed an unlimited amount of French, Spanish and Danish players, but only 2 Brazilians? Ridiculous rule that does nothing but hurt Italians. You can have a rule that requires a minimum amount of Italian players and removing the Non EU clause at the same time

  2. First thing they shpuld do is scrapping growth decree, and giving certain tax breaks benefits instead when club consist of a certain number of homegrown players.

There, you wont breach any law, and clubs will naturally go Italian as it is cheaper and at the same time giving more filterd to the foreign players, ensuring only the best ones are recruited. Just like during the good old days of Serie A

  3. Yes increase Italian players at club level, BUT also do a academy on clinical finishes, strikers, pls address the clinical finishes factor.

  4. Wow is all I can say. Only in Italy can we sabotage our own. Many ,not all,but many of the existing foreign players in Italy are not of higher quality than Italian players, but the foreign players get playing time over equally qualified Italian players. Of course teams should have foreign players, but club teams need to play at least 4-5 Italians of 11 players week in week out, otherwise we will stagnate.

  5. Excellent points fellas. Agree with every one…spot on.

I particularly like the shirting around the labour laws with the Growth Decree @Bunga2. Should be pull by the gov’t on Monday morning.

  6. 30 per cent Italian

expand the number of non-EU players they can have in the side from two to eight

these two ae not mutually exclusive..

  7. Italian players need to do what all the other foreign players do and go abroad and play instead of preferring to sit on the bench to be closer to their Mama’s

That will give them more playing time and experience which in turn benefits the National team.

Juve/Inter ext. will mostly always try and go for a quick ready made fix
Correct me but how many Italians play abroad I can only think of Verratti and Ogbonna must be more,

Italians seem to be a lazy bunch when u look at the foreign youngsters that play on the peninsula and Europe ,
That could also be one reason why we didn’t qualiffor for the WC
