Pasquale Mazzocchi suffered a knee injury during Italy’s recent training retreat, forcing him to the sidelines for a number of weeks.

The 27-year-old Salernitana centre back was an interesting inclusion in Roberto Mancini’s squad, having made his Azzurri debut two months ago in Italy’s 2-0 win over Hungary in the Nations League. He was left on the bench for the win over Albania and had hoped for some minutes in the game against Austria, before suffering an injury in training.

As announced today, Mazzocchi underwent a round of medical tests today to check his condition following an injury in the Azzurri training camp. The tests revealed that the 27-year-old has suffered a contusion-distortion injury to his right knee, an injury that involved the medial collateral ligament.

Mazzocchi has now started physiotherapy treatment and will undergo a further round of tests in the coming days to shed more light on the injury. He will be hoping to mostly recover before the return of Serie A on January 4.
