Italy have called up Cristiano Piccini and Lorenzo Tonelli to replace the injured Danilo D’Ambrosio, Patrick Cutrone and Alessio Romagnoli.

Piccini has been out of Italy since 2014, playing for Real Betis, Sporting CP and now Valencia, where he is the Spanish side’s starting right-back.

Tonelli, meanwhile, is rewarded for his early-season form with Sampdoria, helping them into Serie A’s top six, but no replacement forwards are drafted in.

“I think it’s better that he’s playing abroad, at least he’s playing!” CT Roberto Mancini said of the full-back.

“He’s had several experiences and we’ve been following him for some time. I’d have called him up for the next international break. He can have an important future with us.”

The Azzurri face Ukraine on Wednesday, before taking on Poland in the Nations League four days later.
