Italy and Leeds United are concerned after Wilfried Gnonto was forced to limp off just 22 minutes into this evening’s EURO 2024 qualifier against Malta.
The 19-year-old former Inter youth academy talent was in the starting XI for this match, having been a substitute for Thursday’s 2-1 defeat to England.
He initially seemed to twist his ankle when trying to wrong-foot opposition defenders in the penalty area and stumbled.
Gnonto carried on for a few more minutes, but had to give up when he seemed to put his foot down badly again and was in too much pain to continue.
The wide attacker limped off after treatment and was replaced by Vincenzo Grifo.
This was Gnonto’s 10th senior cap for Italy, in which he scored one goal and provided one assist.
It has been a good campaign for him so far at Leeds United, scoring four goals and setting up three for his teammates in just 20 competitive games for the Premier League club.
