Diego Farias saw his strike squirm through Samir Handanovic’s hands to give Spezia a surprise lead, but Ivan Perisic equalised and the Nerazzurri saw two late goals ruled offside.

“It’s a big result for us, as it’s not easy to stop Inter winning at the moment. In fact, it’s a huge achievement,” Italiano told Sky Sport Italia.

“We did well to stop them getting too close to our penalty area and I think it’s a well-deserved point. This must give us the belief that if we go out there with this spirit, we can get points against anyone. We must have the humility to defend and battle for every result from here to the end of the season. If we play like this, I am confident.”

The last few days have been dominated by the Super League fiasco, and Inter were one of the clubs signed up to the short-lived breakaway league.

“I told the lads we are challenging for Super Safety,” joked Italiano. “Mind you, I saw Romelu Lukaku in the warm-up and immediately went back into the dressing room. I didn’t want my players to see my face when I saw the sheer size of the man!

“I chose the same defenders who did well against Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez earlier this season. Claudio Terzi has a lot of experience and can anticipate situations well. Ardian Ismajli also did well, other than a couple of mad minutes when he twice sent our opponents clear on goal…”
