The 43-year-old has been linked with Sassuolo, as Roberto De Zerbi confirmed he will step down from the position after the season.

Italiano helped Spezia to Serie A for the first time in history in 2019-20 and has now steered the Aquilotti to safety with entertaining football in the top flight.

But the coach’s future is still uncertain and admitted he will sit down to discuss with new owner Robert Platek.

“I’m waiting to speak with the new owner,” Italiano told La Gazzetta dello Sport. “I would like to hear what they have to say, what projects they have in mind.

“We are all ambitious. In any case, I still have one year left on my contract. It’s the same situation as one year ago.

Spezia have included a €1m clause in the contract with Italiano, in case of a unilateral termination of the contract.

“The club wanted it,” Italiano added. “I don’t think it’s a problem.”

Italiano admitted to secure safety in Serie A was ‘worth twice as much’ as the promotion from Serie B.

“The promotion was not planned,” Italiano continued. “Reaching safety was unexpected and is worth double because it was conquered in critical conditions with a very young team.”

Spezia have an attacking approach under Italiano, who admitted he used Zdenek Zeman as a ‘source of inspiration’.

“We conceded 70 goals, yes, but let’s not forget the 50 scored,” he said. “I also liked him [Zeman] as a player.

“He was a great source of inspiration.”
