Vincenzo Italiano rues wasted opportunities by Fiorentina in the 3-1 defeat to Inter, but consoles himself that ‘for 70 minutes we were more than a match for the Champions of Italy.’
The Viola had dominated the first half and taken the lead through Riccardo Sottil, forcing several saves from Samir Handanovic.
However, Matteo Darmian and Edin Dzeko scored within three minutes of each other, then Nico Gonzalez saw red.
“For 70 minutes we were more than a match for the Champions of Italy,” Italiano told DAZN.
“It’s important to see the glass half-full, which is that we played very well for 70 minutes and left the field to applause from our fans, even after defeat. That is important to us and to me.
“In the first half, Inter hardly ever managed a shot on goal and we had many chances to add a second goal.
“After the break, we started getting too deep and that invited Inter back into the game. Inter are so strong physically and have so much quality, we had to expect them to fight back.”
After three consecutive victories and this hard-fought loss to Inter, is Italiano ready to aim higher than just avoiding relegation this season?
“The first objective must always be safety. We’ve got to improve in many ways, including in the final third. We lacked the courage that we had in the first half and that is a pity, because it was a good performance.”
Fiorentina rotated the squad for this midweek round and were missing injured Gaetano Castrovilli, Erick Pulgar and Lorenzo Venuti.
“Everyone must be ready to contribute, and it’s reassuring that we always maintain the same identity as a team, regardless of who is playing. Now we need to results to follow.”
Nicolas Gonzalez was sent off for dissent, two bookings in 20 seconds, as he completely lost his head and sarcastically applauded the referee.
“Gonzalez got it wrong, he will realise that you cannot do these things. Once again we went down to 10 men and ended up losing 3-1. He will learn from this.”
