The Italian Government has given the all-clear to opening up stadiums at 50 per cent capacity, reducing social distancing with a ‘chequerboard’ effect.

The initial plan for the 50 per cent capacity also had fans needing to keep two metres between them, which would make seating rather difficult.

After suggestions from the FIGC and Lega Serie A, the Government agreed to adjust the plans to allow for a chequerboard effect in the stands.

This means the gaps will be counted even diagonally, allowing for more people to fit into the arenas.

The rest of the protocol remains intact, so only those with a Green Pass can enter.

That is the EU version of a COVID passport, an electronic code confirming vaccination, a negative test or a recent recovery from the Coronavirus.

There is also an increase from the original 25 per cent capacity to 35 per cent for indoor sporting arenas.

The Serie A clubs have been adamant they want stadiums at 100 per cent capacity if only those with a Green Pass can enter.
