According to Italian sports papers, Benjamin Pavard, Stefan de Vrij, Denzel Dumfries, and Marcus Thuram were among the most disappointing Inter players in Madrid, while goalkeeper Yan Sommer was the MOTM for the Nerazzurri.

Inter faced Champions League elimination at the hands of Atletico Madrid last night, losing on penalties at the Cívitas Metropolitano.

It was a tough night for the Nerazzurri or, as Gazzetta put it, a slap to their dreams and Italian football.

Many Inter players failed to impress in Madrid last night, especially in defence and attack.

Pavard, De Vrij, Dumfries, and Thuram received the lowest grades from Italian sports papers, but even Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Lautaro Martinez weren’t truly up to the task.

Gazzetta named Pavard the worst Inter player last night, saying that the ex-Bayern Munich defender entered the pitch with such a wrong approach that Inzaghi ‘almost lost patience.’

The pink paper criticised the Nerazzurri boss, rating him 5/10, contrary to Tuttosport and Corriere dello Sportt (6/10).

According to Gazzetta, Inzaghi’s substitutions made Inter too defensive. Hence, the Nerazzurri ended the match with a five-man backline. However, Inzaghi had planned the game well, trying to keep possession to lower Atletico Madrid’s intensity.

On the other hand, Sommer was Inter’s best player against Atletico, according to all Italian sports papers. This says everything about the Nerazzurri’s performance and their surprising Champions League elimination.
