Italian sports papers hit out at José Mourinho after Roma‘s 6-1 defeat against Bodo Glimt in the Conference League.

It was the first time that one of Mourinho’s teams conceded six goals in one game in his 1,007 matches as a coach.

Mourinho rotated his squad heavily ahead of their Serie A clash against Napoli on Sunday but perhaps he would not have imagined such a disastrous performance by his men.

The former Chelsea and Tottenham coach threw his players under the bus at the end of the game, saying they don’t have as much quality as those of Bodo Glimt.

Mourinho: ‘Roma have only 13 players’

The Portuguese coach was rated 4 by La Gazzetta dello Sport, Il Corriere dello Sport and Tuttosport.

The highest rating for a Roma player was 5.5 (Rui Patricio and Tammy Abraham on Il Corriere dello Sport and Carles Perez on Tuttosport.)

The Special One, who had already complained about the squad’s depth after the game against Juventus, was accused of not motivating his players enough.

“His responsibilities are evident and his super-offensive substitutions created the premises for humiliation,” wrote Il Corriere dello Sport.

La Gazzetta dello Sport also highlighted how his starting XI lacked balance, while Tuttosport wrote the result is unacceptable.

  1. I don’t know if he sees this competition as being beneath him, but this competition should serve as acclimatisation to regular rotation and intense schedules because if Mou wants to get Roma to the Champions League and still have them competitive in the league he is going to need to adapt and adapt fast.

  2. So not only does Mourinho not rate his squad players, he decides to field approx 9 of them AT ONCE, when they collectively have very little match fitness, in one of the most awkward away fixtures that you can get. Talk about setting the players up to fail.

It was Mourinho who wasn’t good enough. Everything; his selection, his approach, his subs and his attitude, was terrible. A lot of the players who started the game yesterday are actually decent and had they been given more playing time this season (and been given more respect) they would have fared better.

Ask yourself, if you were one of those starting players yesterday, would you give 100% for such a classless man in your next game? And if you were one of the first choice players, how would you feel about your coach chewing your squadmates out in public like that? This won’t end well.
