Italian media are not optimistic about Inter‘s Champions League clash against Liverpool tomorrow night and La Gazzetta dello Sport suggests the Nerazzurri’s main task will be to avoid a heavy defeat.
Confidence is high in the black and blue half of Milan after a 5-0 win over Salernitana on Friday night. However, their 2-0 loss against the Reds in the first leg in February makes it very difficult for Simone Inzaghi’s men to qualify for the quarter-finals tomorrow night.
Liverpool are unbeaten at home in one year and their 2-0 defeat against Atalanta in November 2020 is their last loss at Anfield in Europe. New Inter signing Robin Gosens scored one of the two Atalanta goals that night.
La Gazzetta dello Sport concedes that Inter have nothing to lose but at the same time, the Nerazzurri must make sure they won’t face a heavy defeat in Liverpool tomorrow.
Doubts regarding the team and pressure from media would re-emerge if Inter badly lose at Anfield. After collecting just two points in the previous four Serie A games, the Nerazzurri returned to winning ways on Friday by beating Salernitana 5-0 at the Stadio Meazza. They sit second in the Serie A table, two points behind leaders Milan, but with a game in hand.
Tuttosport suggests Inter will need to score a goal in the early stages of the match tomorrow to put pressure on Liverpool and keep their qualification hopes alive. The Turin-based paper recalls Inter’s previous victories in England: a 3-0 win against Arsenal at Highbury in 2003 and a 3-1 victory against Newcastle one year earlier.
The suspension of Nicolò Barella will make Inter’s task even harder. The Italy international will be replaced by Arturo Vidal or Roberto Gagliardini, while Joaquin Correa could replace Edin Dzeko up front.
